and publish this my last will and testament in the manner following, that
is to say. First. It is my will and my order that all my just debts and
_________ of funeral and the erection of suitable tombstones at my grave
be paid and satisfied as soon as conveniently can be after my decease.
Second, I give to my dear wife Rebecca Doughty, in lieu of her right of
dower, all my furniture in and about my house (empowering her at the same
time to distribute such part of said furniture to any of my children as
she may think proper) and the benefit or income either by rent or personal
occupancy of my house and lot where I now live during her natural life;
and at her death said property is to be equally divided between my four
children, Elias, Sarah, George and Enoch. I also give her all the benefit
or income by rent of my house and lot adjoining the one where I now live
(both lots are held by the same deed) while she remains my widow, and when
she ceases by death or otherwise to be my widow this property is also to
be equally divided among my four children as above named but it is my will
that neither property shall be in my case sold (except there be found a
lack of personal property to pay my just debts and the expence herein
first stated) til it be necessary in order to its equal division as
aforesaid and it is further my will that if she remain my widow till death
the expense of her funeral and the erection of suitable tombstones at her
grave be deducted from the property before the aforesaid distribution of
it be made. I also give her, after the deduction of the sums hereinafter
stated, the residue of my estate real and personal without the foregoing
limitations. Third, I give to each of my two sons Elias and George and to
my daughter Sarah ten dollars to be paid within sixty days after my
decease. I give to my son Enoch fifty dollars to be _______ under proper
obligations in reliable hands within sixty days after my decease with
interest from the latter date and both interest and principal to be paid
over to him where he shall have arrived at twenty one years of age or if
married sooner at his marriage. Fourth, If at my death there is not a
sufficiency of personal property to pay my just debts and the expenses
named under the first head and also the shares supposed to be provided for
under the Second and named to my children under the Third head and it
become necessary for these purposes to use a part of my real estate it is
my will that the house and lot adjoining the one where I now live be sold
and what remains of the proceeds be put to interest and the income go to
my wife as provided in case such sale be not necessary and that the
principal be finaly divided as in that case provided. Lastly, I do hereby
appoint my dear wife Rebecca Doughty and my trusty brother John Doughty
executors of this my last will and testament - In witness whereof I hereto
set my hand (mark) and seal this nineteenth day of May in the year of our
Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty eight. Wit. John McNeal, John
Doughty, Joseph G. Crate.

the school and is one of its earnest supporters and liberal benefactors,
being secretary of its board of corporators. He established, in 1891,
"The Jerseyman," a magazine of local history, which he still publishes at
Flemington, N. J. He is a born collector, and while interested in all
branches of collecting, pays particular attention to the Postage and

collections in this country. He has also a large library of the
literature of the subject, which ranks second among similar collections.
He lives on a farm, formerly the Reading homestead, near Flemington. The
