n. History of Henry Buck incorrectly given by Stiles' "History of
Wethersfield", Harvey's "Buck Genealogy" and Samuel Buck's "Origin,
History and Genealogy of the Buck Family" according to the Vineland
Historical Magazine, V_N_P55
Henry Buck moved from Wethersfield to Easthampton, LI where he took up
residence as blacksmith for the town in 1697.
n. 1692 moved from the Wethersfield Township, Hartford Co., CT to Fairfield,
and Cohansey,
Salem Co. where he took up residence in Back Neck, below New England
Town in 1697. He, like his father was a blacksmith, but he soon entered
into business about 1704 with Richard Whitacar, trading in dry-goods,
groceries, clothing, liquors, tools for farming, books, etc. - a merchant.
The partnership is said to have possessed a sloop, which traded with New
York, and Boston to Cohansey. The sloop would account for the record of
death from exposure of a young Henry Buck, aged about 22, coming ashore at
Rhode Island in 1720 Dec. supposedly an un-recorded nephew.
n. RWC - it is unlikely the John Buck 65 living in Cape May is not Henry's
1'st cousin and 1/3 owner of the sloop "Dolphin", it being the same as
mentioned above.
n. 1709 Aug 17 his father deeded a dwelling and lands near a place called
Rocky Hill, Hartford Co., CT which he sold for 347 pounds to James Gould,
mariner of Boston who traded at Greenwich for a number of years. Henry,
Jr. was very active in community life; witnessed many wills, took
inventories and served as administrator of many estates. As late as 1715,
he was still called blacksmith.
n. 1707,1708 and Overseer of Highways for the south side of Cohansey.
1709,1719-20 he served as assessor
1710 Dec - 1711 Mar jury forman
n. 1715 Militia for the South side of Cohansey, this also lists Henry Buck,
Jr. which implies there is a generation missing!
1716 he was the constable
1721-22 he was justice of the peace
